About
What’s a Furry Webcomic?
“Furry” is a loosely defined term to describe both a fandom based around the love of anthropomorphic animal characters, and the stories and art surrounding them. “Furry webcomic” is also loosely defined to envelop a variety of comics that feature anthropomorphic characters – typically non-human and/or animal-like.
These characters can take on all sorts of forms: from bipedal animal people, feral critters, and everything in-between. Non-human characters like aliens and fictional beings like Pokemon would also be included under this definition. The “funny animal person” has been a trope in storytelling for, well… just about forever. I’d argue it’s become more of a genre of its own at this point!
This directory aims to be inclusive of the types of characters one may consider “anthro” – just the types of stories that endear us to characters who, while non-human, ironically tend to connect us closer to our own humanity. 🙂
Webcomics are also loosely defined to include any comic published on the web – strip comics, episodic series, graphic novels, vertical scroll, or may even include multi-media hybrids. Generally speaking, it’s sequential storytelling in action on a page… or a webpage, in this case (though many webcomics go on to get published into physical comic books too!). This directory, again, aims to be inclusive of the medium and the niche.
Why Furry Webcomics?
Why not? Here’s a fun fact for you: Did you know that the first webcomic ever published online was a furry webcomic? Or that the origins of the furry fandom was deeply rooted in comics culture? It’s true – on both accounts!
As someone who’s been around in both the wider furry and webcomic communities for a while, I always found it a bit surprising how many webcomics often fly under the radar in these spaces – furry spaces especially, given the fandom’s history. As far as I’m aware, there’s never really been a dedicated hub or directory for connecting the furry fandom to the many webcomic artists creating these stories – and these days, there’s more of them than ever!
While people can discover webcomics through all sorts of means – Reddit threads, tiktoks, social media reposts or word of mouth – there’s never been a convenient place to point someone inquiring about furry webcomics, nor inform how to quickly and easily discover the types of stories and genres they’re looking for. And while general webcomic directories are amazing, (and I’ll always sing their praises!) furry webcomics may sometimes feel out of place or overlooked in such spaces. There’s definitely an audience out there for every webcomic, but connecting to that audience has become more difficult than ever with the ways the Internet has evolved and changed in modern years.
So, why furry webcomics? Because I’m a furry and a webcomic artist who loves furry webcomics! Writing them, reading them, sharing them… and I think it’s time to rekindle that passion in the larger furry community too!
My goal with the Furry Webcomics hub is to connect the wider furry community and fandom to a place where our comics can hopefully find their ways to your screens (yes – yours!) just a little bit easier. And potentially to craft out this niche in the general webcomics community as well, as it’s a huge niche that I happen to be super passionate about!
